OFF SHORE GAMEFISH

Mike Hennessy - - Hawaii On The Fly

Off Shore gamefishing is the ultimate game of patience and determination to target large ocean species that were not meant to be tackled with a meager fly rod. The big blue water challenge for many salt water species on fly can be sought after in the Hawaiian waters. Hawaii has been known for its outstanding big game action in the fishing arena. Hawaii on the Fly, has conventional tackle along with high end Fly Fishing gear to adjust to the fishermans needs and wants for the day. From 2 speed 80 Tiagra Shimano's to 7# fly rods we have it all.

Blue Marlin being the ultimate predator in the sea, will break you and your tackle for a 99.9% chance of loosing the battle. The bite is explosive and unforgettable etched into your mind for the rest of your life along with the moment it smokes out 200yds of backing in less than 3 seconds breaking your tippet along with your 60$ fly line!. Free spooling on that initial run is your only hope to keep from popping the tippet. 14weight--large popper

Stripe Marlin is a worthy opponent and one of the few billfish the you can really target to have a real chance at C/R. Much smaller than a Blue marlin the stipeys are scrappers for their size and will readily take a fly 10 ft off the transom of the boat. You must be quick as the first shot is the best at getting her to eat. Count on many explosive jumps and a few deep rides before release. 12-14wieght-large popper

Spearfish could be my all-time favorite fish for the fly. These snake like billfish are fun to hunt visually by looking for bird signs. They tease in very well for close presentations of the fly and will stick around for multiple casts if you mess up the first cast. Other billfish will leave the area the if you miss the first cast. 9-12weight-medium popper or large streamer.

Mahi Mahi is second only to billfish in the excitement of visual fly fishing treats. They jump, run, dive, flip, and many other acrobatic defensive measures to break your tippet. They tease in usually very close to the boat and give you a slight advantage in that there are most commonly more than 1 fish per group of fish creating a competitive feeding frenzy on your fly. This is a big advantage for a positive take in any type of fly-fishing. Have a second angler and rod ready while the first hooked fish approaches as the (Followers) might be coming in behind the lead fish looking for more food. Cast the fly 5 ft in front of the hooked fish letting the fly sink until just about the tail passes over the fly, then start to strip fast, Whammo!! Double hook-up!!! yeeeeehaaaaaa 9-12weight-smaller popper or streamer.

Wahoo are as tough as blue marlin to get on the fly since they do not stick around long next to a boat. You have about 2 seconds to make the cast on the tease or game over. If you are lucky enough to hook one keep your drag light for that first 200yd run into your backing. You say at the hook up"Wahooooooo", then when he cuts your shock tippet you say "Onoooo". The Hawaiian word for wahoo, is ono, ya bad joke but its true this will happen nearly everytime you hook a wahoo (ono).

Yellow fin tuna could be the most consistent target for the offshore species at certain times of the year. Usually around all of the FAD's (Fish Aggregation Devices) placed around all the Hawaiian Islands to start food chains around the floating ball, attracting bait, which attracts tunas and other predators. Casting your fly around these buoys can bring on bites from small tunas to the unlucky 200lber that will clean your reel of backing, a classic ZINNNNGGGGGG POWWEEEEEEE!!!! 9-14weight-streamer.

Skipjack tuna are very common and readily will take a fly. Skippy's could be the hardest fighting fish for their size in the world. Explosive runs and deep dives make this tuna a great adversary. 9-12weight--streamer
